NBL PRESERVATION GROUP - MOUNTAIN TANK APPEAL

Designed and built in the Victorian heyday of steam, 100 Dubs A Class Tanks were constructed at Glasgow Locomotive Works for the Natal Government Railways between 1888 and 1899. They were the first locomotives in the World to utilise the 4-8-2 wheel arrangement and their great success paved the way for many larger and more powerful engines of the same configuration.

The A Class Tanks were absorbed into South African Railways stock in 1910 and spent many years slogging it out on the spectacular 1 in 30 mountain grades in Natal.

In the 1960s, most of the Class were scrapped or sold into industrial service where the remaining few engines worked on shunting duties into the 1970s and 1980s.

Now 107 years old, NGR No. 133 is one of the last survivors of the Class and has been kindly donated to the NBL Preservation Group by her last owners, AMCOAL. After a period of storage at Grootvlei Power Station, she has now been moved to Masons Mill locoshed on the Umgeni Steam Railway in Natal whilst fund raising takes place.

No. 133 is safe for the present time but we urgently need around 15,000 to cover initial restoration work and shipping and transport costs for repatriation back to the UK. Henry Dubs & Co. built more than 5,000 steam locomotives over a 40 year period in Glasgow but sadly only two of them have been preserved on the UK mainland.

The preservation of this fine old veteran provides us with a unique opportunity to fill an important gap in British locomotive building history. If you are able to help us in any way, please complete the following form and send it to the address below. All donations, large or small will be appreciated and will be acknowledged. Thank you for your support and interest.
